The mistake many of us make is thinking that an experienced driver with a fully charged battery is enough to get us to where we want to go. But all too often, we overlook what’s holding us back. If the brakes are on, we’re not going to get very far. If the terrain is inhospitable, the journey is tough.
We need to orchestrate a whole system with many moving parts to ensure everything is working and playing well together.
That’s why even with the right kind of motivation, we don’t get as far as we’d like. Motivation is essential—it’s key to unlocking your potential—but it isn’t enough to accelerate and reach your destination.

With powerful questions and attentive listening, together we’ll gain clarity on how to proceed.
Once your action plan is in place, this is the time to get started!
You set the time intervals – weekly works well – and self-monitor and optimise what is working and what isn’t.
Once your time limit is up, it’s time for the next cycle of improvement.

How much does coaching cost?
Coaching tends to be expensive, often beyond the reach of students. Knowing how much students could benefit from coaching, we have to think outside the box to make coaching inclusive and accessible for all.
Behind the scenes, we’re busy putting together a digital coaching platform that students will be able to access for the cost of, let’s say, three cafe lattes a month. But sadly, we’re about 9 to 12 months off from offering this option.

What does the 15-minute free session involve?
Our chat isn’t a formal coaching session. Instead, it is an opportunity to:
- Understand what your current needs are, in particular, your core reason(s) for wanting to benefit from coaching
- Informally get to know each other, albeit briefly, to make sure you are comfortable and clear with the process
- Answer any questions not covered here!
- Clarify whether coaching is the right choice for you. As we say, there is absolutely no obligation on your part to follow through.
Can someone else pay for my coaching?
How much coaching do I need?
Do I need coaching if I'm also enrolled in the Self Leadership course?
Both our coaching and the self leadership course can be undertaken separately or in combination. For instance, if you enrol in our applied self leadership course, you may find at some point that you want extra support… but it is not a requirement. In fact, our course will teach you how to ‘self coach’.
Is coaching similar to mentoring, counselling or teaching?
There are similarities, but coaching is distinct in the following ways.
Mentoring is essential for dissertation success, but your research supervisor delivers this. As an expert in your subject discipline, they mentor your actual research.
While coaching can be therapeutic, it is neither therapy nor counselling. Coaching is forward-looking, therapy is typically backwards-looking. Both are useful but are distinctly different.
When being taught, we ask questions and receive answers. Coaching flips this. Instead, expect powerful questions, and with the right kind of support, you’ll feel empowered to find the right answer.It’s also important to point out that coaching is not a magic wand either! Quick fixes are extremely tempting but they don’t work in the long run. Instead, our coaching uses evidence-based ingredients that are designed to work together to deliver the results you want. However, while coaching isn’t a magic wand, we aim to make the coaching process as easy and effective as possible.
